Overview of the Sillustani Necropolis Tour – 4 Hours

With the “Chullpas de Sillustani” tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the world’s largest necropolis. The Chullpas are situated on a peninsula that extends into the blue waters of Lake Umayo, at an altitude of 4000 meters. This beautiful high-altitude lake is fed by the Chaullamayo River to the southwest and the Ccaccapunco River to the north, with a maximum depth of approximately 14 meters. It is connected to Lake Titicaca through the Illpa River.

Sillustani Necropolis tour: 4-Hour Itinerary  

The excursion begins with the hotel pickup (located in the city center) or Plaza de Armas, heading towards the Sillustani Archaeological Complex, situated 33 km from the city of Puno, approximately a 30-minute drive.

During the journey, our guide will provide insights into the city of Puno, its history, and the origins of the Sillustani tombs, belonging to the Kolla culture (1200-1450), which thrived in the northern part of the lake, in the locality known as Hatuncolla.

Upon arrival, we will take a walk in the Sillustani archaeological site, constructed in the 12th century by a civilization that inhabited the area before the Inca dominion. The creators of the impressive funerary towers are known to have been part of the Kolla culture.

The most imposing towers were built for important leaders and priests. Regarded by locals as sacred sites, these locations continue to host ceremonial activities and rituals to this day. We’ll have free time to rest and take photos by Lake Umayo.

Finally, we’ll return to the city of Puno.
