Itinerary
Discover a lesser-visited yet truly fascinating side of Cusco with the South Valley Tour—perfect for travelers who love archaeology, colonial art, and Andean landscapes without spending the entire day. In just a few hours you’ll visit three outstanding landmarks: Tipón, famous for its remarkable Inca hydraulic engineering; Pikillacta, a walled settlement from the Wari Empire that highlights a powerful pre-Inca legacy; and Andahuaylillas, whose church is known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” for its impressive Baroque artwork. An excellent complement to the Sacred Valley for a broader view of Cusco’s history.
We start at 08:45 a.m. with hotel pick-up and travel south of Cusco by tourist transportation. During the approximately one-hour drive, you’ll enjoy beautiful Andean scenery. Our first stop is Tipón, an impressive Inca complex where stone canals controlled water flow coming from the high slopes of Pachatusan mountain—evidence of advanced planning and engineering. Next, we visit Pikillacta, a walled citadel from the Wari Empire (its name means “Flea Town”), notable for its urban layout, plazas, and streets. We finish at the church of Andahuaylillas, known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas”, where you’ll admire paintings, Baroque altarpieces, and the famous pentalingual door. We return to Cusco around 2:30 p.m..
