Itinerary
Discover one of Cusco’s most underrated gems on the Waqrapukara Trek, a full-day experience that blends hiking, history, and dramatic Andean landscapes. Known as the “Horned Fortress”, Waqrapukara sits above a stunning canyon and impresses with its strategic location and unique architecture linked to both the Inca and Chanca cultures. The day starts before sunrise with a scenic drive to Santa Lucía and a moderate uphill trek of about 1 hour and 30 minutes (2.5 km). At the site, your guide will share the story and significance of the complex, and you’ll have free time for photos and exploration. The tour includes breakfast and a box lunch enjoyed in a spectacular natural setting before returning to Cusco in the evening.
We start with hotel pick-up between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m.. After gathering the group, we travel by tourist transport to the town of Santa Lucía, on a drive of approximately 3 hours. Along the way, we stop in Cusipata to enjoy breakfast before continuing. Upon arrival in Santa Lucía, we take a 15-minute detour on a winding road to Punta Carretera, where we make final preparations before starting the hike. From here, we begin the uphill trek to Waqrapukara, taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes and covering 2.5 km through Andean scenery and natural viewpoints. Once there, we take a guided tour of this Inca and Chanca archaeological complex, known as the “Horned Fortress”, followed by free time to explore and take photos. Afterward, we enjoy a box lunch and hike back along the same route to Punta Carretera, where our transport is waiting to return to Cusco, arriving around 6:00 p.m..
