Itinerary
Enjoy a rare and unforgettable combination on the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (3D/2N)—perfect for travelers who want living culture, high-Andean scenery and the most iconic Inca Trail arrival. Day 1 takes you through the authentic Lares Valley, visiting traditional textile communities and spotting alpacas in open mountain landscapes as you reach the spectacular Ipsay Pass (4,440 m) and the high-altitude Ipsa Cocha Lake (4,200 m). Day 2 turns legendary as you hike the Short Inca Trail (Km 104), exploring Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna before reaching Inti Punku (Sun Gate) for a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu. On Day 3 you’ll visit the citadel with your guide, exploring its temples and terraces before returning to Cusco—an Andean journey packed with culture, landscapes and emotion.
We depart Cusco in the afternoon toward Calca and the community of Wakawasi (Huacahuasi), with a travel time of about 3 hours 20 minutes. From here, you begin hiking through the Lares Valley, a route that blends living Andean culture with high-mountain scenery—home to traditional weaving communities and grazing alpacas. The hike starts at 3,750 m (12,303 ft) and climbs to the day’s high point at Ipsay Pass (4,440 m / 14,435 ft), a spectacular natural viewpoint. You then descend to Ipsa Cocha Lake (4,200 m), surrounded by puna landscapes and mountain silhouettes, and continue to Patacancha and Rumira, finishing around 3,800 m (12,467 ft). From there, transport takes you to your accommodation in Ollantaytambo (2,851 m / 9,353 ft). The trek is described as challenging to moderate depending on your fitness level—an incredibly rewarding start to this combined adventure.
Hiking distance: 14 km (9 miles). Route: Huacahuasi to Rumira (Patacancha).
You’ll wake up early and take the train to Kilometer 104, the starting point of the Short Inca Trail. Begin with a visit to Chachabamba (starting altitude 2,100 m / 6,900 ft), then hike gradually upward through historic Inca paths as the scenery shifts into cloud forest and opens onto views of the Urubamba Valley. You’ll reach Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive sites on the route, famous for its agricultural terraces and dramatic mountainside location. After a boxed lunch, continue to Inti Punku (2,730 m / 8,792 ft), the highest point of the hike and the iconic gateway where you’ll enjoy your first unforgettable panoramic view of Machu Picchu. You’ll then descend to Aguas Calientes to rest for the citadel visit the next day.
Hiking distance: 10 km (6.3 miles). Difficulty: moderate.
You’ll take the bus up to the entrance of Machu Picchu and walk 15 minutes to the main viewpoint to begin the visit with a stunning perspective of the sanctuary. Explore temples, terraces and the Inca quarry while your guide explains the history and meaning of this sacred site, connecting what you experienced in Lares and on the Inca Trail to the grandeur of the citadel. You can also add the Machu Picchu stamp to your passport as a souvenir. At midday, you’ll start the return journey by train and ground transport back to Cusco, ending an unforgettable mountain adventure.
